Next year Chester Pride, the annual event celebrating diversity and the LGBT+ community, will celebrate five years of Pride!
Chester Pride, the biggest free celebration in Cheshire West and Chester, has announced the details of its annual festival and has revealed a surprise move of date.
The fifth annual event will take place on Saturday 19 August 2017 and will include the popular Chester Pride parade through the city centre, followed by a programme of activities taking place in Castle Square.
Chair of Chester Pride Helen Pickin-Jones said ‘2017 will see Chester Pride celebrate our fifth anniversary and it is thanks to the amazing response from the LGBT+ community, their allies, and the support of local organisations and companies that we have been able to achieve this and keep Pride free for all to attend in our vibrant and diverse city. Chester Pride is organised by a committee of dedicated volunteers and started as a ‘maybe we could do this’ in 2013, and has grown to a staple event in the city centre attracting thousands of people. Each year we get asked to consider moving Chester Pride to a warmer month with lighter evenings, so to celebrate five years, it will take place on Saturday 19 August’.
The 2016 event attracted around 6,000 attendees despite the poor weather, and saw the largest parade yet which included community groups, public sector services, local companies and businesses, trade unions, bands, dancers, drag queens and many more. The family friendly event was hailed as having something for everyone, featuring three stages of music including the new live band stage ‘Drum With Our Hands Original Music Stage’, cabaret in ‘The Glitter Lounge’ in association with MBNA and Bank of America, and the M&S Bank main stage which featured key performances from girl group Stooshe, Saffron from 90’s band Republica and Danny Beard from Britain’s Got Talent. Chester Pride also included a Childrens Zone; a marketplace, a fair, and a Health, Life and Wellbeing zone which housed over 60 stalls from local charities, voluntary groups, community groups and public sector services.
The Chester Pride committee will be organising fundraising events throughout next year which will include the return of the popular Chester Pride family fun days in Grosvenor Park.
